Library and Mansion exteriors and East Lawn

In 1903 Henry Huntington, a railroad builder and real estate developer, purchased the San Marino Ranch with its citrus, grain, and fruit crops. He and his gardens superintendent William Hertrich developed the ranch into a gracious estate. Across the lawn is Huntington’s mansion, designed by Myron Hunt in the beaux-arts style. The Library building facing it houses the rare books and manuscripts that Huntington collected. Displayed in the mansion, now known as the Huntington Gallery, are the famous British portraits, The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough, and Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence, along with other European paintings and decorative arts. The Library displays a Gutenberg Bible and an illuminated manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, among other treasures.
