No matter how good your custom profiles are, at the end of the day the difference between a mediocre image and a great image often depends on your ability to interpret the color and tone of the original scene. There are many flawed images that are worth rescuing – this 37 page step-by-step tutorial looks at a number of trick techniques for dealing with exposure, saturation and color casts including:

• LAB curve correction basics
• Removing color casts
• Apply Image command
• Saturation control in LAB

The tutorial begins with an exploration of LAB and some basic observations of curve edits in LAB. It proceeds to some common uses and finally, ends up with a fairly sophisticated correction that simulates the use of flash fill in a contrasty lighting situation. As an additional bonus, the final image project shown above details a method of simulating a limited depth of field by bluring the background – there's a trick to doing this correctly so that you can't detect the application of Gaussian blur at the edges of the figure!
