RGB False-Color Technique

Creative Color from White Light

This tutorial resurrects an old analog photographic technique that has special application in still life imagery – updating tri-color filtration photography for the digital age! You can create a range of color effects using white light manipulating the RGB channels of several exposures together into one document.

RGB - False Color

Learn how to introduce intense color to monochromatic subjects – use digital photography and Photoshop to creatively manipulate the lighting in the separate RGB channels of the image. Various "False-Color" effects are explored in this 40 page PDF step-by-step tutorial. We examine Photoshop techniques like:

  • "Split" channels
  • "Merge" channels
  • Layer apply modes - Color, Luminosity & Screen
  • Hue/Saturation Adjustment layers
  • Blending variations with layers and layer masks
  • Multi-layer lighting
At the end of the tutorial there is a special gallery of example images to inspire further experiments.

This is an intermediate level tutorial – the 40 page PDF steps through the construction of 4 images but a basic understanding of layers and layer masks is helpful. The sample files for the tutorial are available as a separate download through a link in the PDF - you will need Aladdin's "Stuffit Expander" to decompress the sample files!
