Capture Calibration

Calibration for digital capture using Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop CS2

In the good'ol days of film we used to buy up a case of Ektachrome or Fuji Velvia, rent space in one of the camera store refrigerators to store the film and shoot a test on 1 or 2 rolls to determine the bias of the film. This calibration test was critical to achieving the best results with a given emulsion and was the first thing any decent photographer did before shooting a big job! Nowdays this has become a lost discipline.

If you aspire to operate in the upper 20% of quality you need to be using a RAW file workflow. Calibrating your digital camera and fine-tuning your processing can make all the difference in the final results. This PDF tutorial details the steps and give you the necessary background to calibrate your capture system for your particular camera and specific lighting setup - whether its daylight, tungsten or strobe!
